Randonesia: Blabbering mouths, the rotting corpse of human decency, and accountability in the internet age. ›

randonesia:

Ah, the internet. That fabulous land of free information, free expression, and convenient online bill paying. It’s a tool that has radically changed the lifestyle of anyone residing in an area with a minimal telephone line system. It makes things possible that existed only in the realm of…

i’ve just sat for an hour and read this and completely agree with it. if you have a spare time, read this please.

he is right in everything he says.

i’m 17 years old and i have a computer in my bedroom with no restrictions and i spend hours a day on here. our internet usage is unlimited and my parents won’t tell me to turn the internet off, they know i’ll go mad. i have a blackberry where i can use the internet and read the newspaper, it even acts as a torch. i text countless people and use black berry messenger. it’s odd for me to not be in conversation with someone when i am awake.

but i think it is crucial, as mentioned that people of my age learn how to communicate properly. i troll tumblr and you’re all ‘socially awkward’ some of you might be shy or whatever, but i think if you spent less time on the internet and some time actually interacting with people then you might be a whole lot better off. even if it’s just with your parents or with people at college or school, rather than wasting your dinner break blogging about how you have no friends.

i’m not going to pretend i’m perfect by saying that i don’t spend hours on the internet because i do, but i use it mostly for information purposes. i’m always researching something or reading something new, or getting new music. and i think that’s okay because i can communicate! there’s people in my english who struggle to read simple texts because they don’t speak. and i know people who don’t socialise and i can’t understand it. i think i have been lucky in my upbringing that i have been encouraged to speak and always been surrounded by other children.

the internet is good, because it does provide a platform for friendships that can be extremely valuable, i am not disputing the usefulness of the internet i am disputing the reliance people have on it. i’ve met some wonderful people on here, and keep in contact through this website, but if it came down to it, i can speak effectively. i can engage well in conversation with practically anyone and can change the way i present myself to suit the conversation. i can confront people in difficult topics and i can argue for england. basically i am able to competently convey a message without offending someone and deliver my veiws effectively.

but the problem is, an increasing number of people cannot. and it’s something that really needs to be addressed. i don’t know how, but it does.

& yes i’m aware i’m bigging myself up but what is the point in denying what i can and can’t do, and not being proud. dam i am proud, because i’m a good human.
